When God Is Silent Day 12: Habakkuk 3:16-19

Read & Journal

Read Habakkuk 3:16-19. Consider these questions:

  • When Habakkuk caught a glimpse of God’s awesome power, how did he respond?

  • Compare Habakkuk’s attitude in these verses to Habakkuk in Chapter 1. How is his attitude different?

  • Reread verse 17. If you were writing it in your own words or referencing your own situation, what would you say?

  • Think about your journey of faith. How has God been your strength? Thank him, using specific examples.

Ponder

Even if it all falls apart, I will trust you, Lord.

Those are the words Habakkuk seems to be uttering in verses 17-18. If the crops failed, if there was no food, if the flocks died and Babylon reigned, still Habakkuk would lift his gaze and his praise to the Lord. Whatever may come, Habakkuk was committed to trusting God.

Maybe your world feels like it’s falling apart right now. Maybe you have your own list of devastation to cry back to God—even if I lose my job, even if I have no power or strength, even if the things I need to live all go away, I trust you to sustain me. It’s a bold, desperate, convicting prayer—one that I honestly truly wonder if I could pray if I found myself in a situation like Habakkuk’s. And truth be told, a big part of me doesn’t want to think too hard about it because I’m scared that I would be less than faithful.

But if the book of Habakkuk teaches us anything, it’s that we can come to God with our questions, with our fears and with our doubts. And while he might not always answer us, he will begin to show us more of himself and his character. And while the truth of who he is may not change our current circumstances, it can change our hearts.

Whatever may come, Lord, we will trust you. We will seek you. We will rejoice, for you are the God of our salvation!
