When God Is Silent Day 11: Habakkuk 3:12-15

Read & Journal

Read Habakkuk 3:12-15. Use these prompts to engage with what you’ve read.

  • What do these verses teach you about God’s love for his children? Explain.

  • Look back at verses 8-11 and scan over today’s passage. Relying on your knowledge of the Old Testaments, what references do you see in these verses to God’s deliverance of the Israelites throughout history?

  • When you think about your own life, what are some examples you can recall of God’s work in your own life? Jot down a list if you need to.

  • When you are in a difficult season or a time when God seems silent, how can dwelling on how God has worked in the past help you to refocus on who God is?

Ponder

This section of Habakkuk’s prayer can seem violent, but the overwhelming message is clear: God fights for his children. Habakkuk may have wondered if God was reneging on his covenant with his chosen people when God declared that judgment would come at the hands of Babylon, but by this point in his prayer, Habakkuk understands that God has never given up on his people.

He will fight for them.

He will rescue them.

He will save them.

In seasons of distress or suffering, we may wonder if God has abandoned us. When injustice runs rampant, we may think God has looked away and forgotten us. When evil seems to win, we may question God’s goodness, but he is still the same God who fights for his people. Whether our season lasts for a few months or a lifetime, the God who created us and called us to himself will not abandon us.

As believers, we know that in this world we will have trouble, but Jesus has overcome the world (John 16:33). Our journeys of faith will be marked by suffering, sometimes brought about by our own sin and sometimes brought about so that God’s glory can be displayed. No matter how long that season lasts, we know that at the end of it all, every knee will bow and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord. And he will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away (Rev. 21:4). Praise be to God!
