Was it worth it?

On Saturday, I decided to go see “The Ghosts of Girlfriends Past.”

When I left the theater, I couldn’t decide if it was worth it. I mean, I thought with Matthew McConaughey and Jennifer Garner, what could go wrong? I mean I like them both and when I thought about it, the pairing seemed genius.

But the movie left me sort of bleh. I absolutely HATED McConaughey’s character, a womanizer with no regard for people’s feelings, marriage, or anything but making himself feel better. Michael Douglas is one of the “ghosts,” as McConaughey’s character’s late uncle who taught him all there is to know about hitting on women. Which basically means using innuendo and being a jerk. I got really tired of the easy, crude, and sometimes lewd innuendos. Jennifer Garner was great, but I’m not sure there was much range for her. I mean, she was the smart, slightly uptight girl who had tried to tame Connor Mead (McConaughey’s playboy character) and gotten burned in the process.

And the use of the “ghosts” like in “A Christmas Carol” seemed novel at first. But really, they’re just kind of annoying. There’s an old girlfriend from junior high as the Ghost of Girlfriends Past, his assistant as the Ghost of Girlfriends present, and a non-speaking but beautiful Ghost of Girlfriends future—who, of course, Connor tries to hit on. It’s just not cool. And I think the storyline borrowed too much from the “A Christmas Carol” idea, complete with Connor being shown his own grave and pushed inside.

I knew going in not to expect an award winning movie. This is a chic flick! I knew that. But I thought there might be some redeeming feature. But with a weak storyline, weird cinematography that made everyone look weird and McConaughey look kind of old (?), and innuendos that woud make me uncomfortable taking a teen girl to the movie. . . .I’m just not sure it was worth it. Even if the Garner/McConaughey combo seemed genius. It just. . . wasn’t right.

Oh, well. Maybe the next movie I see will be better!
