The Promised One: Christmas Day

Read & Journal

Read Luke 2:25-38, Revelation 1:4-8. Today is likely a busy day, but take a moment to simply mull over Simeon and Anna’s faithful response to Jesus, then ponder the glorious day Jesus’ incarnation points us toward: his second coming.

Consider these questions:

  • What are some examples of joy you find in Simeon’s hymn of praise?

  • Consider the word “consolation” in verse 25 (CSB and other translations), a word that can point toward comfort or a sense of renewed hope. How has Jesus been your consolation lately?

  • What words or phrases reveal Anna’s devotion to God?

  • Anna’s response to seeing Jesus was immediate; she began praising God. How have you seen God at work in your life this week? How will you praise Him for it today?

  • Jesus’ incarnation may not have attracted the attention of the world, but no one will miss his Second Coming. As you read Revelation 1:4-8, what words or phrases call forth your praise?

Ponder

Unfolded across the centuries, God’s story of redemption doesn’t end with Jesus’ birth. His sinless life, his substitutionary death and his glorious resurrection make a way for our eternal salvation. “All glory to him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by shedding his blood for us. He has made us a Kingdom of priests for God his Father. All glory and power to him forever and ever! Amen!” (Rev. 1:5b-6).

As we celebrate today with all the joy the occasion deserves, let us also look forward to the day Christ returns, and our faith is made sight.

“He who is the faithful witness to all these things says, ‘Yes, I am coming soon!’ Amen! Come, Lord Jesus!” —Rev. 22:20
