Eight books that inspire hope, spark imagination and leave you feeling renewed and restored.

Our Summer 2025 theme is “relax,” but we’re convinced that true relaxation is more than vegging out on the couch for hours at a time. When we truly relax—and let go of those anxious breaths we’ve all been holding for a while—it rejuvenates our spirits, restores our hope and perspective and inspires our imaginations.
With that in mind, we’re sharing a few books we think we help you exhale and find a little refreshment in a busy season.
NONFICTION/SPIRITUAL FORMATION
Books that speak to rest, Sabbath and the importance of unplugging and slowing down:

The Unplugged Hours by Hannah Brencher
Our June Bookery Book Club pick, The Unplugged Hours is an invitation to loosen the grip our phones and constant connection have on our lives and enjoy the abundant life we were called to live.

Embracing Rhythms of Work and Rest by Ruth Haley Barton
A 2022 release, Barton’s book chronicles her journey toward a consistent observance of Sabbath in a world that often equates our worth with busyness and productivity.
Ruthless Elimination of Hurry by John Mark Comer
In a world infected with “hurry sickness,” Comer invites readers into a counter-cultural lifestyle of reclaiming rest, focus and purpose.
A Long Obedience in the Same Direction by Eugene Peterson
Peterson’s classic is focused on the Psalms of Ascent, which we studied this past Lent. It isn’t just a book about rest, sabbath or relaxation, but it’s a beautiful read that draws you closer to the Savior, which at the end of all things, is the truest form of relaxation.
FICTION
Peace Like a River by Leif Enger
Enger’s coming-of-age story turns 23 this summer, but the novel is the perfect addition to a “Relax” reading list. Peace Like a River follows the story of Reuben Land, who ends up on a cross-country search for his outlaw brother, with plenty of everyday miracles and glimpses of truth, beauty and goodness all along the way.
Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery
Reading this familiar classic is a little like settling in for a long conversation with a good friend. The classic invites us into the imaginative life of orphan Anne Shirley, teaching us about love, hope and family—all while encouraging us to open our eyes to see the true beauty of the world around us.
The Bookshop by Penelope Fitzgerald
Short-listed for the Booker Prize, The Bookshop tells the tale of Florence Green, a widow who uses her small inheritance to open the only bookshop in a small seaside town. It’s a quiet, witty read and perfect for those of us who find delight in books.
BONUS

Bread and Wine by Shauna Niequist
Part memoir, part cookbook, Niequist’s 2013 release lives up to its subtitle, “A Love Letter to Life Around the Table.” It’s a beautiful reminder of the beauty and brokenness of living in community and the power of opening our homes and our tables to those around us.
