Books to help refresh your heart, mind, home and soul
It’s a new year, but you don’t necessarily need a “new you.” This winter, we’re meditating on what it means to be refreshed. The word carries with it a sense of restoration and renewal, revival in a sense. So this winter, as we ponder what it means to seek and rest in refreshment from the Lord, we’re also looking at what that means for our homes, hearts and minds.
With that in mind, here are a few books we’re adding to our Refresh reading list this winter.
Timothy Keller
Go Forward in Love, released last fall, pulls from the late Tim Keller’s long list of best-sellers to create a 365-day devotional. The book invites readers to refocus on God and offers insight and wisdom on what it means to follow him in our daily lives, our work and our relationships. If you, like us, are looking for a little refreshment in 2025, this book may be a powerful way to focus on who God is and why you have hope because of it. Get your copy here.
Karissa Barker
Here at The Bookery, we’re not interested in perfect homes because, well, they aren’t real. Your home is where you live and it should be a place where you can truly live. But we’re also not interested in adding more and more to-dos to an already full list. All that said, Karissa Barker’s The Home Reset offers a look at refreshing your home and building systems and processes that keep it organized and easier to manage, so you can live your life without the stress of mess, clutter or excess. Scott Erikson
At its core, the idea of refreshment is deeply connected to hope. If 2024 was hard and you’re mourning the death of a dream, Scott Erikson’s book Say Yes may be a book to consider reading this winter. As the Amazon description says: “In Say Yes, Scott helps you learn how to reawaken your deepest desires, disempower your greatest fears, and identify the destructive narratives holding you back.” Get your copy here.
James Herriot
If you, like us, are big fans of PBS’ “All Creatures Great and Small” TV series, now may be the time to dive into the memoir that shaped the series. Written by the real-life James Herriot, a veterinarian in Yorkshire, and follows him as he deals with patients, learns his trade and builds deep relationships along the way. For animal lovers and those who love a good story, these memoirs might be just what you need to refocus and refresh your mind and heart this winter. Get your copies here.
