Summer Reading Plan: Philippians 2

Last week, we began our Summer Reading Plan by focusing on Philippians 1. This week, we're moving on to Philippians 2.

Parts of Philippians 2 may be familiar to many of you. Philippians 2:6-11 contains a beautiful early Christian hymn centered on Jesus. These familiar verses point to Jesus' preexistence as a member of the Godhead, his divine nature, incarnation and death and his lordship.

In Philippians 2, Paul continued to encourage his readers to live lives marked by Christlike character. The hymn in Philippians 2:6-11 is definitely part of this exhortation, but it continues in verses 12-18. As you read, take note of words or phrases that describe the kind of life God has called believers to.

Philippians 2 ends with Paul's discussion of his future plans, couched in his commendation of both Timothy and Epaphroditus. As Richard R. Melick writes in Volume 32 of The New American Commentary, "Paul ended this section of the epistle by commending the service of these two Christlike men. Both thought of others before their own concerns, and both served the Lord and the church. They would journey to the church in Paul’s stead, in the hopes that he would soon follow.” [Richard Melick, Philippians, Colossians, Philemon, vol. 32, The New American Commentary (Nashville: Broadman & Holman Publishers, 1991), 122.]

July 11-17 we'll be focusing on Philippians 2. If you'd like a little guidance on how to break up the chapter, here's a suggestion:

  • Monday, July 11: Philippians 2:1-4

  • Tuesday, July 12: Philippians 2:5-11

  • Wednesday, July 13: Philippians 2:12-18

  • Thursday, July 14: Philippians 2:19-24

  • Friday, July 15: Philippians 2:25-30

  • Saturday, July 16: Look over Philippians 2 as a whole. Because Philippians was written as a letter, consider writing out the first chapter by hand.

  • Sunday, July 10: Is there a verse that stuck out to you personally during this week's reading? Focus on memorizing it.
