Scripture Can Change our Perspective

Focusing on the truths revealed in God’s Word can be the perspective shift we need
If you’re anything like me, you probably sometimes need a reminder to stop dwelling on the circumstances and details that mire your daily life. While those things are incredibly important, I can often become so focused on the here and now and how I feel about it all that I lose sight of the fact that God can use my circumstances to reveal more about who he is and what he is doing in the world.

Scripture is often a vital tool God uses to lift my eyes from the daily grind to focus more on him. In those times when I’m overwhelmed and spiraling in a torrent of worry and anxiety, Scripture quietly reminds me that God is in control. When I’m sad or can’t see how my current situation could ever be used for his glory, God’s Word invites me to rest in the God who brings beauty from ashes and makes all things new. When I’m happy or overjoyed, the Bible calls me to recognize and give thanks to the Giver of all good things.
We’re focusing on the idea of perspective this winter here at The Bookery, and Scripture is a living, breathing tool God uses to shift our perspectives. So, if you need to refocus your heart and mind a bit, here are a few Scriptures that help, encourage and challenge me.
Trust in the Lord with all your heart;
do not depend on your own understanding.
Seek his will in all you do,
and he will show you which path to take.
(NLT)
And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. (NLT)
“My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the Lord.
“And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine.
For just as the heavens are higher than the earth,
so my ways are higher than your ways
and my thoughts higher than your thoughts.” (NLT)
Think about the things of heaven, not the things of earth.
Let all that I am praise the Lord;
with my whole heart, I will praise his holy name.
Let all that I am praise the Lord;
may I never forget the good things he does for me.
He forgives all my sins
and heals all my diseases.
He redeems me from death
and crowns me with love and tender mercies.
He fills my life with good things.
My youth is renewed like the eagle’s! (NLT)
But then I recall all you have done, O Lord;
I remember your wonderful deeds of long ago.
They are constantly in my thoughts.
I cannot stop thinking about your mighty works (NLT)
Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect. (NLT)
Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. 4 Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too. (NLT)
