Make Every Day Special

It was a Tuesday morning. And I was standing in my kitchen making pancakes.
I’ll just let that sink in. Pancakes. The breakfast reserved for weekends because it takes actual work and a little bit of time to make. Pancakes with maple syrup served warm and melting butter on top.
Juxtapose that mental image with that of my usual breakfast—peanut butter spread on a piece of wheat toast with coffee, or a hastily scrambled egg with toast, gulped down with a glass of orange juice as the clock counts down to 6 a.m. before I rush upstairs to shower and get ready for work.
But yesterday, I decided that each day deserves a little celebration.
Truth be told, I’ve been a little too self-focused lately. Too selfish with my time; too focused on my own frustrations and struggles to see past the clouds, much less celebrate the day or serve others.
It had to stop. And I had to be the one to make the decision to stop this endless cycle of self-centered selfishness.
I needed to remember that each day is a gift. Instead of wallowing in self-pity, I needed to allow God’s gracious gift of another day to overwhelm me.
So, I decided I needed to strive to make every day special. To trea teach day as the gift it is. To not squander my time and my thoughts on things that don’t matter or I can’t control. And to remind myself of that truth when the day is hard and the way unclear.
For me, it started with a very simple step: making a special breakfast on a not-so-special day. In the next few weeks, it will likely involve taking my eyes off myself and doing something to bless someone else. But the point is getting past myself and living each day—each moment—focused on the gift of time I’ve been given.
You’ve been given today. How are you going to use it? Make it special!
