Editor’s Note: Rediscover

Introducing The Bookery’s Spring 2025 theme, a focus on remembering, reconnecting and nurturing meaningful things from the past

A woman's hands, crocheting purple yarn

About a year ago, I rediscovered crocheting.

As a child, my mom had taught me how to chain along with single and double crochet stitches, but, to be honest, I never really got past chaining. Somewhere in my parents’ basement there may still be the world’s longest crochet chain hidden away in an unsuspecting pile of yarn.

But I’m someone who loves to create, to make things with my own hands. It’s the passion that fuels this website and drives my need to try new recipes and devise a few of my own. After seeing some truly amazing examples of crochet work on Facebook, I thought, “I could do that,” and immediately dove into a very intensive and slightly less-than-beginner throw pattern. When I finished it some months later, it wasn’t perfect by any means, but it was something I’d made with my own hands.

Rediscovering crochet has brought a sense of calm in my life. Rather than doom scrolling social media on evenings when I actually sit down to watch a show on TV, I usually pick up a crochet hook and work on a project. Truth be told, only a few have come out looking absolutely perfect, but I keep trying and I keep creating.

This spring, we’ll be digging more into the idea of rediscovery here at The Bookery with our seasonal theme. To rediscover something is  to find something that was lost or forgotten, to remember and reconnect with something important and life-giving.

Over the course of the next few months, we’ll be looking at that theme from a number of different angles, from exploring what it means for us spiritually and emotionally to reconnecting with time-honored recipes and traditions. We’ve got some fun content planned this spring, and I hope you’ll join us for the ride!

So, my challenge for you this spring is not to look back with the rose-colored glasses of revision, thinking everything was better in the past, or to fall into the nostalgia of reminiscing. My challenge is that you rediscover things that matter and reconnect with them so you can walk boldly into the future God has planned for you in confidence and security, knowing that he who promises is faithful and true.
