Daylight Saving Time: America’s exhausted

It’s the first Monday after most of America has changed to Daylight Saving Time. And America’s exhausted.
I don’t know what it is about the time change, but this whole spring-forward-one-hour thing kills me. KILLS me. Let’s just get this out there: I love to sleep. I think it’s a special blessing from God. And losing an hour on Saturday night? Not cool. Even more uncool? Getting up with it’s dark as well, night, outside and having to pretend this is fun. I hate driving to work in the dark. I hate, hate, hate it. The only good thing that comes out of this time change is that it’s lighter later in the day.
Just for those of you who like to learn (like me; I’m a nerd and admit it), here’s the skinny on Daylight Saving Time and how it came to be: • Daylight Saving Time (Note: it’s SAVING—no S—not SAVINGS time) is the practice of advancing the clocks in the summertime so that the afternoons have more light and the mornings have less. • Modern Daylight Saving Time was proposed proposed in 1895 by George Vernon Hudson. Another guy named William Willett also came up with the idea a few years later and lobbied for his proposal to be accepted in the UK until his death in 1915. • In the past, proponents of DST have said it helped conserve energy, gave people more leisure time, and allowed us to enjoy more of those sunshiney summer days. • During World War I, many countries adopted DST as a way to save coal during wartime. • Since 1997, the U.S. has started DST on the second Sunday in March and ended on the first Sunday in November, nearly 2/3 of the year. • Studies have found that DST has little or no effect on energy consumption and might even involve increases in consumption due to extra afternoon cooling and extra morning heating.
Needless to say, DST is evil. EVIL! I propose it serves no purpose, other than making most of America extra cranky today. So watch out world! Most of America is sleep-deprived today. Let’s just get through this day with a modicum of grace and go to bed early!
