Around the table

I’ve always loved the quiet simplicity of the Lord’s Supper. As a Baptist, it’s not a weekly occurrence, but we observed it on Sunday at my church. And oddly, I found tears in my eyes as the pastor said those familiar words from 1 Corinthians and invited us to share in this simple meal. For me, there’s always been this quiet moment of soul-searching as the elements are served by the deacons. Sometimes, I speak silent prayers of praise to Jesus, thanking Him for His sacrifice. Sometimes, I can only simply implore God, asking and allowing Him to search me for inconsistencies, sin, my worthiness to participate. It wasn’t any different this Sunday.

I love that moment during the observance when the pastor serves the deacons. In that act, I’m always reminded of Jesus taking on the role of a servant and washing His disciples’ feet. He didn’t have to, and as the Rabbi, He shouldn’t have. But He did. There’s something important in that fact. Jesus’ act of servitude has always stood as a stark reminder to me of what my life is supposed to be about.

I love the Lord’s Supper because there’s unity in it. It’s something we as the church do together, remembering the One who died to set us free, called us to a new way of life, and proclaiming that one day, He’s coming again. It’s a brotherhood, a family—diverse but united in one Spirit, one truth, one baptism, one God.

I don’t really know the point of this post, other than to share with you how once again, I’ve been touched by the Holy Spirit and reminded of the great mercy of our God. These days, I better understand the joy of obedience. And I love to be around His people, sharing in service to which He’s called us all.
