Words, words, everywhere are words

I love quotes. I think I might even be a collector of quotes, considering I have a document saved on my computer at work of quotes about God and a relationship with Him, write out quotes that speak to me and post them around my office, and have one from Augustine written on the chalkboard above my sink in my kitchen. I underline quotes in books, repeat movie lines to friends, and drag song lyrics into conversations.

I like words. I like quotes that speak some truth to me or help me to see something differently. Today, I’ll share a few I like, collected from reading, songs, and anywhere in between.

“The friend who can be silent with us in a moment of despair or confusion… that is a friend who cares.” — Henri Nouwen

“Our hearts are restless until they rest in Thee, O Lord” —Augustine

“It’s all happening!” —numerous characters in the movie Almost Famous

“Writing is an act of faith, not a trick of grammar.”— E.B. White

Ray Kinsella to Dr. Graham: It would KILL some men to get so close to their dream and not touch it. God, they’d consider it a tragedy. Dr Graham: Son, if I’d only gotten to be a doctor for five minutes . . . now that would have been a tragedy. —Field of Dreams

“The soul hardly ever realizes it, but whether he’s a believer or not, his loneliness is really a homesickness for God.” -Hubert van Zeller

“The right to be heard does not automatically include the right to be taken seriously.” —Hubert Humphrey

“I don’t love you and I always will.” —the Civil Wars in “Poison & Wine”

“If I find in myself a desire which no experience in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that I was made for another world.” —Mere Christianity, C.S. Lewis

“You were restless; I was somewhere less secure.” —The Swell Season in “In These Arms”

“All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well” —Julian of Norwich

“For everything there is a word, for everything but this.” —Ryan Adams in “Crossed-out Name”

“I know the words of life are true, but sometimes they’re like salt on a wound.” —Andy Gullahorn in “Resurrection”

“Country music is three chords and the truth.” —Harlan Howard

“We earned a degree in chasing Vanderbilt women . . .”—Andy Davis in “Good Life” (I went to Vanderbilt for grad school)

“Relying on God has to begin all over again every day as if nothing had yet been done…” —C.S. Lewis

I’m sure there are many, many more, but time is short and it’s Monday. Enjoy!
