Read Habakkuk 2:6-14. Ask yourself:
What do these verses teach you about the world and the ways of the world?
What does this passage teach you about God’s character?
If you were Habakkuk, hearing God’s vision for the first time, how do you think these verses would have made you feel? Why?
Habakkuk was focused on the Babylonians, but God’s vision lifted Habakkuk’s eyes from the Babylonians to God’s glory. When have you been so focused on the circumstances, you missed or overlooked what God was doing?
God assured Habakkuk that the wicked Babylonians would one day be held accountable, and God would remain faithful to his people. How does this give you hope in your current circumstances?
Ponder
When Habakkuk got mired in the circumstances of the moment, God lifted his eyes to the bigger picture. Judgment was indeed coming at the hands of the Babylonians, but, true to his character, God would one day hold them accountable for their unjust, ungodly actions. Habakkuk had perhaps questioned God’s character and doubted God’s goodness, but God was and would always be faithful. What God promised would be fulfilled, and all of it would bring an undeniable awareness of God’s glory.
It’s easy to get so mired in the circumstances of the moment that we lose focus on the bigger story God is writing through our lives. The day’s worries and the injustice of today’s world can seem absolutely overwhelming if they’re all we can see. But what God wanted Habakkuk to see—and for us to understand—is that this moment today is not the whole story. Our lives are all part of the greater story of hope he is writing in the world, all helping to bring an undeniable awareness of who he is. In the midst of today’s very real worries and concerns, lift your eyes. This is only one part of the story that God is writing, and the end he has promised is glorious. Read Revelation 21-22 if you need a reminder.
Lift up your eyes today. Focus on the truth of who God is and his faithfulness to keep his promises. Ask him to use you to bring an undeniable awareness of his glory to those around you.
