Today marks the fourth Sunday of Advent. While traditions vary, many Christians around the world will mark this day by lighting a candle symbolizing peace. This week, as we look forward to the joy of Christmas day, we will turn our hearts and minds to the events leading up to Jesus’ birth in Bethlehem, recounting how God worked across the centuries and through humanity to make salvation possible. Through Jesus’ life, death and resurrection, we have eternal peace with God. Let your weary heart rejoice.

Read & Ponder
Read John 1:1-18, focusing on verses 10-18 this week. As you meditate on these verses, use these questions as a journal prompt:
What do verses 10-18 teach you about God?
What do you learn about Jesus in this section of John 1?
What do these verses teach you about salvation, about the goodness of God’s plan?
Over the past few weeks, we’ve examined how God had whispered (and shouted) that he would redeem his people. How do you see references to God’s faithfulness to save in these verses?
Reread verse 12, maybe even aloud. To all who believe and accept Jesus, God has given the right to become children of God. Not servants or slaves, but children. Reflect on that truth and write a short prayer of response.
