This Sunday, many believers around the world will light the first candle of the Advent wreath. While different traditions may use different themes, many believers mark this first Sunday of the Advent season by lighting a candle symbolizing hope. This week, we will return to some of the oldest stories of Scripture and celebrate the glimpses of hope in Christ that God has woven throughout His Word since the very beginning.
Read & Ponder
Read John 1:1-18, focusing on verses 1-5. As you meditate on these verses, use these questions as a journal prompt:
What do verses 1-5 teach you about God?
What do you learn about Jesus in this section of John 1? What do these verses reveal about His mission and reason for coming?
Mull over verse 5. What does it mean to say today that Jesus’ light cannot be extinguished by the realities of your life?
How will you trust Him today with the realities that feel too dark, too heavy and too preposterous to believe that He can do anything about them?
