The Bookery's founder and the author of Steadfast, Mandy Crow, shares a little of the story and the goal of this year's Summer Reading Plan.

Steadfast.

The word means “unwavering,” “firmly fixed in place,” or “unmovable,” but I like to think about it as the sum of its parts.

Stead = Steady. A consistent march toward a goal. Persistent and pursuing, maybe slowing down or speeding up, but always moving toward the goal.

Fast = Held securely. Fast, not as in a speed, but as if you’re held in a strong grip that won’t let go, strong and unwavering, committed.

A steadfast faith, then, is a faith that’s committed and unwavering, consistently pursuing Christ when it’s easy and when it’s not, when the world celebrates your values and your beliefs but also when it laughs them off. In a dark, unbelieving world, a steadfast faith shines like the stars in the sky on a long winter night—but it can also feel like swimming upstream while the world embraces the lies our culture tells us.

“You only live once” may be the rallying cry of our culture—meant as a command to find pleasure wherever you can and indulge in your desires because life is fleeting—and you might as well wring as much enjoyment from it as possible while you’re here.

“You only live once” is also the rallying cry of 2 Peter, but the focus is a little different.

Pleasure, earthly values and desires are fleeting, but eternal life with God is what lasts.

The world is going to tell you a lot of things are important or valuable, but the true, eternal value lies in following Christ and living obediently.

The world is building empires on a foundation of pleasure, desire and whatever feels good, but God is building an eternal kingdom on Christ, and he is what matters.

The values  of this world are like straw in a furnace, but the grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ will never fade.

Yes, you’ll only live once, but it’s for all of eternity, so sink deep into the grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ. Stay focused. Don’t give up.

Remain steadfast.
