Songs from the Heart Day 16

woman writing in a journal

Write the Psalm

If God hadn’t been for us

    —all together now, Israel, sing out!—

If God hadn’t been for us

    when everyone went against us,

We would have been swallowed alive

    by their violent anger,

Swept away by the flood of rage,

    drowned in the torrent;

We would have lost our lives

    in the wild, raging water.

Oh, blessed be God!

    He didn’t go off and leave us.

He didn’t abandon us defenseless,

    helpless as a rabbit in a pack of snarling dogs.

We’ve flown free from their fangs,

    free of their traps, free as a bird.

Their grip is broken;

    we’re free as a bird in flight.

God’s strong name is our help,

    the same God who made heaven and earth.

— The Message

Using whatever translation speaks most to you, write Psalm 124 in your own handwriting. Often, by using more than one sense, we glimpse truths we didn’t notice when just reading Scripture. If you want to add another layer to the process, try reading Psalm 124 aloud or listening to someone read it on your favorite Bible app. As you write, think about how God has entered into some of the toughest seasons of your life and made his presence known. Thank him for being a God who cares for his children and sets us free from the bondage of our sin and our broken world.
