Sometimes, I need a Shepherd

Updated: Mar 4, 2023

I love when God makes sure you understand something. Yesterday, my pastor preached from Micah (“Bethlehem Ephratha, you are small among the tribes of Judah. . . “) and today, after something happened in which I needed the assurance of my Savior, I felt impressed to read Scotty Smith’s book of daily prayers’ entry for today. It was on Micah 5:2,4-5, which in case you haven’t caught on, is exactly what my pastor preached about yesterday.

This concept of Jesus as the Shepherd who will “stand and shepherd” His children “in the strength of Yahweh” was one I needed to be reminded of—and maybe need to be reminded of daily. As I often do, I processed these thoughts and my life through writing. Today, I wrote a poem. Now this poem is only a few minutes old at the time I’m typing this and I haven’t read it over to see if it’s any good. So I’m just sharing it as is—good, bad, and/or ugly.

It’s called Sometimes, I need a Shepherd.

Sometimes, I need a Shepherd showing me the way. The path is dark; the end unclear. Sometimes, I need a Shepherd who simply draws me near.

I need to hear His heartbeat thump against my ear. I need to feel His comfort; I need to know He cares.

Sometimes, I need a Shepherd to tell me when I’m wrong. To guide me and correct me; To pull me from despair.

Today I need a Shepherd; I’m a lamb confused and scared. Today I need a Shepherd showing me the way.
