Recipe: Puff Pastry Sausage Pinwheels

A crowd-pleasing recipe that’s so easy you’ll love to make it!

Ever found a recipe that’s a true crowd-pleaser but so simple and easy that you can barely take credit for it? This is that recipe!

Maybe that sounds overly confident, but every time I’ve taken this appetizer (or snack supper/girl dinner) to a party, I’ve only come home with crumbs. But really, there’s nothing to it! All you have to do is brown some sausage, layer the ingredients on the puff pastry, roll up, slice, bake and serve.

You just don’t have to tell people that’s all you did!

PLUS: this recipe is highly customizable. Use these ingredients as your starting point, but feel free to adjust to your tastes. Want something more on the Italian side? Use Italian sausage, pesto and mozzarella. Feeling Tex-Mex? Use salsa, shredded chicken, cumin and Mexican cheeses. Looking for a brunch version? Add scrambled eggs and use breakfast sausage or bacon. The gist: make this recipe work for you.

Puff Pastry Sausage Pinwheels Ingredients

  • 1-2 sheets puff pastry, thawed to room temperature

  • 8 oz cream cheese (block or container of whipped cream cheese)

  • 1 pound sausage (I usually use breakfast pork sausage, but feel free to use Italism sausage), browned and drained

  • 1 to 1 ½ cups cheddar, shredded

  • Cajun spice (or your preferred spices), to taste

Puff Pastry Sausage Pinwheels Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400.

  2. Prep the puff pastry, rolling it out on a lightly floured surface to make it just a smidge thinner and wider.

  3. Brown the sausage until cooked through in a skillet. Drain any excess fat.

  4. Whip the cream cheese until very spreadable. Spread generously  on the puff pastry. Sprinkle the cream cheese with spices.

  5. Sprinkle cooked sausage over the cream cheese.

  6. Top with shredded cheddar.

  7. Roll the puff pastry into a log and slice into rounds, just like you would cinnamon rolls.

  8. Bake on a large baking sheet (line with parchment paper for easier cleanup) and bake 15-20 minutes or until golden brown.

  9. Enjoy!
