I'm originally from Missouri, and we're very proud of our delicacies.
Toasted ravioli? You're welcome.
The waffle cone? Yep, that was us too.
Gooey butter cake? Thank you, St. Louis.
Now, Southern cooks are going to look at this recipe and say, "Those are chess squares." And, well, they kind of are. Some bakers say Gooey Butter Cake uses more butter; others say the original recipe didn't include cream cheese. But instead of dwelling on the details, let's unite on one front: this dessert is delicious no matter what you call it!

Gooey Butter Cake Ingredients
Cake
1 box yellow cake mix
1 stick butter, melted
2 eggs
Topping
1 package (8 oz.) cream cheese, softened
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
3 1/2 cups powdered sugar
Gooey Butter Cake Instructions
Mix together the cake ingredients. The batter will be thick and stiff. Spread into a greased 9x13 pan.
In another bowl, combine the topping ingredients. Spread on top of the cake mixture.
Bake at 350 degrees for 40 minutes or until the top begins to get firm.
Remove from the oven and sprinkle with additional powdered sugar, if desired. Cool before slicing.
Enjoy!
