It’s my birthday and in my elderly state, I have no ideas of what to write. Therefore, we’re going on a little trip to Wikipedia, and I will be sharing some random October 1 facts with you. Because we all know how reliable Wikipedia is. And I am officially starting a movement to get my birthday listed on the October 1 entry for Wikipedia. . . but I fear I am not famous enough. Enough blathering!
Three October 1 Events
331 BC – Alexander the Great defeats Darius III of Persia in the Battle of Gaugamela.
1811 – The first steamboat to sail the Mississippi River arrives in New Orléans, Louisiana.
1961 – Baseball: Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle of the New York Yankees engage in an epic battle to break Babe Ruth‘s single season home run record of 60 in 1927. Maris ends up hitting his 61st against the Boston Red Sox, passing Ruth.
Two October 1 Births
1924 – Jimmy Carter, 39th President of the United States, recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize
1963 – Mark McGwire, American baseball player
One October 1 Death
2004 – Richard Avedon, American photographer (b. 1923)
One October 1 Holiday
International Day of Older Persons (seems fitting, doesn’t it?)
Have a great day, guys! And thank you for all of the birthday wishes and fun you guys have given me throughout the year and in celebration of my birthday this year. One of my most cherished blessings is my friendship with you!
