Four books we’re adding to our reading list as we explore what it means to live authentic lives.

This fall, we’re focusing on authenticity here at The Bookery, delving into what it really means to be genuine, real and true in our faith, our relationship and every aspect of our lives. So, being people who love books, we’re adding a few books to our fall reading list that hit on this topic. If you want to join us, here are a few of the titles we’re adding to our list.
Gifts of Imperfection
Brene Brown
Brene Brown isn’t a Christian writer per se, but rather a researcher and a storyteller. Her books and her Ted Talks deal mostly with vulnerability, shame, empathy and leadership. Her books are perennial bestsellers. Gifts of Imperfection originally released in 2010 and invites readers into authenticity by acknowledging their imperfections. Rather than trying to be our perfect idea, Brown invites us to accept that we are not perfect people and explores how we can cultivate courage, compassion and connection in accepting who we really are rather than who the world tells us we should be.
The Remarkable Ordinary
Frederick Buechner
Frederick Buechner was a Christian memoirist, novelist and pastor who passed away last August at the age of 96. One of Buechner’s most memorable pieces of advice to his readers is to “listen to your life,” and this book, released in 2017, is designed to help you pay better attention to your remarkable life and what God is doing in it. The book is a collection of previously unpublished Buechner writings, composed of essays drawn from two series of talks Buechner gave—the 1987 Norton lectures and 1990 Laity Lodge lectures. Buechner’s invitation for each of us is to recognize the eternal significance of each of our stories and live out of that truth rather than the idea that we are insignificant and unknown.

Tim Keller, John Inazu
Living authentically as a follower of Christ isn’t necessarily easy in today’s world. Best-selling writer and pastor Tim Keller, who passed away earlier this year, and legal scholar John Inazu set out to answer the question of how Christians can show respect to people with radically different beliefs while still remaining faithful to the gospel. The book includes conversations with Christian recording artist Lecrae, Shirley V. Hoogstra, the president of the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities, Tish Harrison Warren, an Anglican priest, and many more. The book aims to show us how various people of faith of seeking to live authentic Christian lives in a complex, divided world.
The Road to Character
David Brooks
If we’re called to live authentically, then we are called to be people of character, people who are what we say we are. In The Road to Character, New York Times columnist David Brooks, explores the concept of character and what it takes to build a strong inner character. He does so by exploring the lives of a number of people and historical figures, including Dwigh Eisenhower and Christians Dorothy Day and St. Augustine. The book calls readers to build rich inner lives marked by integrity, humility and moral depth.
