Dispatches

It doesn’t feel like Wednesday, since I had Monday off, so “Dispatches” feels likes it’s arriving too early in the week. But never fear! I can find something—no matter how inane—to write about. You don’t have to read it if you don’t want to. But it’s WAY more fun if you do!

• Last night was the Heart concert. Let’s just saw it was a pretty fun concert. Ann and Nancy have still got it, no matter what anyone else says. I have decided, though, that I would like to be Nancy Wilson when I grow up. And Ann Wilson. Actually, I would like to be a combination of both. I would have Nancy’s wild, long red hair and crazy guitar/mandolin/harmonica/whatever else she played last night skills and her funny little jumping on stage and I would have Ann’s voice. Because no one else quite ever sounds like her and she is AMAZING. The things she can do with her voice! If I were this Ann/Nancy combo person, I would be a superhero goddess of rock. For real. I would also make sure that my poster for the concert was not as ugly as the one last night.

• A concert is an interesting place to people watch, particularly concerts like last night’s in which the band’s fan base crosses several generations. Mindy and I were among the youngest there, except for a smattering of girls who came with their moms. Lots of moms and dads were there with adultish children, set on introducing their kids to a band they loved. There were people who’d been Heart fans from the very beginning and looked like it. There was the guy who punched his fist into the air through the entire concert, slow songs included. And the girl who danced as if she were in a trance (at Woodstock) with flailing arms and swaying hips. It was the weirdest combination of people ever. And there were lots of fashion choices, hairstyles, and people behaving strangely to watch. Let’s just not talk about our “friends” behind us who were scary and hilarious at the same time. And I wanted to beat up one of them because she kept talking at scream level during the opener. And then, she sang along. She wasn’t as bad with Heart, but wow. Also: Alison Krauss sang with Ann! It was AMAZING! The whole place stood up and screamed when they introduced her. Too bad Allison was wearing an outfit and boots she’d borrowed from a pirate friend. And Wynonna was there. We saw her being escorted out as we were leaving. That made me snort, if only because the scary people behind us said they “would just die if the special guest was Wynonna.”

• Today I have department meeting and a lunch meeting. I just said no to going to chapel. I feel bad about that, but every month our department meeting falls on chapel day, meaning that there is no like 2.5 hours I’m expected to be out of my office in meetings. Add the lunch meet and greet thing today and most of the day has just been stripped away. I can’t get my work done as it is, so something had to give today.

• I left my satellite radio in my office on all night long. I feel badly about this because I don’t know how it happened! I guess I just got in a hurry when leaving yesterday. And I guess hits of the 70s played on 4DCT all night long.

• My dog needs a haircut. She has a reddish poodle afro. Seriously, poodles may not shed and have low dander, but they make up for it with the cost of getting them groomed.

OK, enough for today! I’ve got a lot to get done before that first meeting. I hope you all have happy Wednesdays! 🙂
